This 110x73cm oil pastel painting on watercolor paper, is the street showing the west façade leading up to the famous St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest. This is the first painting in my “Budapest" series and was made to simply be put on my living room wall. Oil pastels were the medium chosen because I had been trying to convince my distance learning IB art students, during Covid, that they should try a medium that was dry and easier to transport and keep at home. I put my money where my mouth is when I decided to see if I could take on the challenge myself.

I used a photograph as a reference but re-contextualized what I borrowed to create a new work of art. As this was my first serious oil pastel painting, I wanted to come up with a unique style that would express my love for Budapest through bold color, playful rhythms and raw emotional impact. I tried to use impressionistic strokes to engage the viewer’s eye with texture and movement.

Love the painting, vibrant colors, and unique style! This painting is special for us because our son was born at the buildings and the Basilica is always beautiful. It will always remind us of the beauty of Budapest.

The use of vibrant colors in the painting suggests that the artist wanted to convey a sense of energy and vibrancy in the scene.

The presence of people walking on the street with open umbrellas suggests that it is raining, which adds an element of dynamism to the scene. The use of oil pastels allows for a rich and textured surface, which can give the painting a sense of depth and dimensionality.

The composition of the painting is important to note as well. The street leading to the Basilica acts as a vanishing point, drawing the viewer's eye towards the center of the painting. This creates a sense of depth and perspective, which can make the scene feel more immersive.

Overall, "Basilica" by Tabatha Waller-Hefko is a beautiful painting and a vibrant and lively depiction of the street leading to the Basilica in Budapest. The use of color, texture, and composition come together to create a sense of energy and dynamism in the scene.

Personally I love this one very much, especially the tree's foliage they are literally glowing with inner light emanating from them.
